Well over a thousand people turned up for last Sunday's Party in the Park in Falmouth.
A variety of bands from right across the county performed a wide range of music, keeping fans happy until the late evening. The party finished dead on ten o'clock, as the organisers had promised, and a team of volunteers cleared up and dismantled the stage and other facilities - working until the small hours of the morning.
The party was organised by the local Youth Link team, run by Cornwall Youth Service, and was funded by Engage West Cornwall and Cornwall Youth Music Action Zone.
The afternoon skate and BMX competitions went really well, with football and basketball also proving popular. There was a lot of interest in the DJ mixing and the afternoon events were well supported by local traders. One of the high spots was a huge mural - a 'paint the day' project organised by local painter Oliver West. At one stage there were more than fifty young 'artists' taking part in this.
The evening saw some wild music from Falmouth local boys Turgid, Spoonfed from St Just, Rabit (sic) from Porthleven, My Cyanide Eye from Saltash, Twin Fast from Callington and a late and popular addition - Cold Blue. All-girl band Nuke the Barbies also made a late appearance and were very popular.
"It was great," said Party organiser Nigel Turner. "The young people helped with much of the organising and the clearing up afterwards. There were some really professional skaters demonstrating their skills in the afternoon and some brilliant bands in the evening - I would not be surprised if a couple of them go a long way. I'd like to say thanks and well done to all involved."
Falmouth Police were pretty pleased with the way the event went: "There was one incident right at the end which may not even have been related to the Party," said a local officer. "Otherwise it all went very smoothly, there were no complaints to us from local residents and we see no reason why it shouldn't take place again next year. Certainly Dracaena Playing Fields seems to be an ideal venue - although we did have to close our Station windows at one point in the evening when a particularly loud band were playing!"
"We were very pleased with the event and with the responsible attitude of all the young people involved," said Andy Moore, Chairman of Engage West Cornwall, the funding body behind Party organisers Youth Link. "Engage funds a number of youth projects around the county - all of which involve young people themselves in their organisation and running. I'm sure Party in the Park will encourage other youngsters to get involved in local schemes and come up with their own ideas. I hope there is another successful event next year."

Local boys Turgid were among the well-received line-up.
